Inner CV joints connect the drive shafts to the transmission, while the outer CV joints connect the drive shafts to the wheels. Many rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive cars as well as trucks also have CV joints.
In front-wheel drive cars, ball-type CV joints are used on the outer side of the drive shafts (outer CV joints), as the tripod-type CV joints are mainly used on the inner side (inner CV joints). Usually, that noise gets louder when you accelerate while making a turn.

A CV axle has two CV joints (an inner joint and an outer joint). These joints allow the axle to transfer the engine's power to the drive wheels at a constant speed while accommodating for the different travel conditions, including the up and down motion of the suspension and cornering.
Another symptom of a problem with the CV axle shafts is grease on the inside edge of the tire or along the underside of the vehicle. A torn or cracked CV boot will leak grease that ends up tossed around while the axle turns. A leaky boot will eventually lead to CV joint failure, as dirt and debris will get into the boot and damage the joint.
The CV Boot is a ribbed, rubber flexible boot that keeps water and dirt out of the joint and the special grease inside the joint. Pictured here is a view of a front, outer CV boot that has torn open. The greasy mass inside is the actual joint itself.
Constant-velocity joints (also known as homokinetic or CV joints) allow a drive shaft to transmit power through a variable angle, at constant rotational speed, without an appreciable increase in friction or play.
The CV joint is sealed and protected by a rubber CV boot that keeps the grease in the joint and contaminants, such as dirt and water, out. When the boot fails because of a tear or hole, the constant velocity joint will fail eventually too.
